For centuries, Cumberland County’s populations have relied on the Delaware Bay and the rivers and creeks that course through the region. Both for the transportation avenues and natural resources they provided, and continue to provide, this mix of land and water activity has been central to the economic and cultural development of the region. The maritime landscape that emerged from activities where land and water meet—the boats and buildings that animate maritime life–is testament to this history and continues to inform how we think and about and view the region today.
Dr. Chiarappa was most recently Research Professor of Chesapeake Regional Studies; Director, Cultural and Natural Resource Initiatives at Washington College. His research, teaching, public programming, and civic engagement focus on the history of America’s built environments and landscapes, American environmental history, American maritime history, and the wider field of material culture studies. He also specialize in public history and has taught courses in historic preservation, maritime preservation, documentation methods, and cultural resource management and through this work have conducted numerous field schools and outreach projects. Prof Chiarappa is a graduate of the Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Vernacular Architecture Forum and currently co-edit Buildings and Landscapes: The Journal of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. He worked extensively with a variety of museums, government agencies and environmental organizations, including the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service. He serves as Historian-in-Residence at the Bayshore Center in Port Norris, New Jersey and is a member of the New Jersey State Review Board for Historic Sites

Originally built to work the oyster beds around New York City, the catboat migrated down the New Jersey coast after the Civil War. The type evolved as it moved, becoming the general-purpose workboat along the back bays and, eventually, a sophisticated racing boat that still competes today. In this talk, we will take a look at how working sailing vessels developed and the forces driving that development, touching on everything from technological change to shifting social hierarchies.
