Flagship: Monuments to Migration and Labor

Flagship: Monuments to Migration and Labor visits the Bayshore Center at Bivalve on October 9 and 10, bringing stories of South Jersey’s labor, migration, and oyster industry to life through a unique mobile monument.

Created through a year of conversations and programs with communities throughout South Jersey, Flagship brings to life stories from Millville, Bridgeton, Seabrook, Port Norris, Roebling, and Atlantic City.

Here in Port Norris, the project focuses on the Black migrants who worked in the oyster industry, planting, harvesting, shucking, and processing oysters for commercial markets.

Experience Flagship at the Bayshore

Friday, October 9 | 5–8 PM

Flagship arrives at the Bayshore as part of our monthly 2nd Friday celebration.

Explore the mobile monument with NJMML artist Immanuel Oni while enjoying an evening on the waterfront with live jazz and R&B from the Eddie Jordan Trio, fresh oysters, local food, and drinks.

Saturday, October 10 | 11 AM–4 PM

Flagship will remain at the Bayshore Center for visitors to explore and engage with throughout the day.

Meet community stakeholders and members of the NJMML project team, learn how the monument came together, and discover more about the histories and communities it commemorates.

About Flagship: Monuments to Migration and Labor

Flagship is part of Monuments to Migration and Labor, a project centered on the people, communities, and labor that have shaped South Jersey.

The mobile monument was inspired by conversations and programs with community stakeholders throughout the region and creates a space to explore stories of migration and labor that are an important part of South Jersey’s past and present.

Its visit to Port Norris offers a special opportunity to connect these larger stories directly to the history of the local oyster industry and the people who helped build it.
