DESCRIPTION:Build a Mini Crab Trap at the Bayshore Center\nBuild a Mini Crab Trap during our August Second Saturday Kids Program! Young explorers will discover how traditional crab traps work while designing and building their own miniature trap. \nAfterward\, participants will head down to the docks to test their creations and see if they can catch a crab while learning about the wildlife and waters of the Delaware Bay. \nThis interactive program is perfect for curious young explorers who love nature\, science\, and getting their hands dirty! \nAugust Kids Program: Build a Mini Crab Trap\nDuring this hands-on educational program\, children will learn the basics of recreational crabbing and discover how crab traps are designed to safely catch blue crabs. Using simple materials\, each participant will build a mini crab trap to take to the docks for testing. \nAlong the way\, we’ll talk about the importance of blue crabs to the Delaware Bay ecosystem\, the role they play in the food web\, and why healthy marshes and clean waterways are essential for marine life. DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: NJ Folklife Short Films\nJoin us for our August Wednesday Film Feature as we explore the traditions\, craftsmanship\, and communities that have shaped New Jersey’s cultural heritage through a collection of historic documentary films. \nThis special screening features five short documentaries from the 1980s highlighting traditional activities within the New Jersey Pinelands National Preserve\, followed by the documentary The Sea Bright (1991). Together\, these films celebrate the people\, occupations\, and waterways that have defined New Jersey’s history for generations. \nAugust Wednesday Film Feature: NJ Folklife Short Films\nThe first five films were created for the New Jersey State Museum’s exhibition\, “New Jersey Pinelands: Tradition and Environment\,” based on fieldwork conducted by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Originally distributed by New Jersey Network\, these documentaries introduce viewers to some of the region’s enduring traditions\, including: \n\nRailbirding in the coastal meadows\nCranberry growing in the Pine Barrens bogs\nFoxhunting through the pine forests\nGarvey boat building for Delaware Bay clamming\nCedar harvesting in the Pinelands swamps\n\nFollowing the short films\, enjoy The Sea Bright (1991)\, which traces the history of the traditional Sea Bright skiff along New Jersey’s northern coastline.
