SUMMARY:July Saturday Highlight Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturdays at 1pm for our Cabinet of Curiosities Highlight Tours\nMuseums were originally cabinets of curiosities filled with rare antiquities and exotic specimens. You think you have seen it all\, but our museum is filled with many stories and cool artifacts. Grab a beverage from AJ’s Pub\, come for a half hour for a highlight tour or program and stay for lunch\, too! \nFree for members or $7 Museum admission\nJuly 1 – Junior Order of United American Mechanics \nTake a closer look at this fraternal organization by examining ledgers and paperwork from the 1920s. Hear how the JOUAM provided disability and life insurances for certain oystermen while lobbying the government to keep prayer in school and “criminal and diseased aliens” out of the country.  \nJuly 8 – The Meerwald Family\nOver the past several years\, the Meerwald family portraits and frames were restored by an art conservator thanks to grants received from the Posomokin #875 Chapter of The Questers. Go on a guided tour of the portraits to hear stories about the family members. \nJuly 15 – Watermen’s Memorial Bell\nIn 2016\, the Port Norris Historical Society\, the McBride Family Enterprises and the Bayshore Center unveiled the Watermen’s Memorial Bell to honor the 100+ oystermen who perished while working the Delaware Bay and River. View newspaper clippings to learn more about some of the men’s lives. \nJuly 22 – Battle of Dallas Landing (Skirmish on the Maurice River)\nIn August 1781\, a skirmish occurred on the Maurice River which is believed to be the only military engagement in Cumberland County with  casualties. The skirmish involved some Cumberland County militia and a group of Loyalists. Ten years ago\, the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission performed a multi-year study. Find out about their findings and view a short film. \nJuly 29 – Central Railroad of New Jersey\nThe oyster industry during the first three decades of the 20th century would not have prospered without the railroad. It was the railroad that provided the infrastructure to take the oysters to market. Take a tour of railroad related artifacts and learn about this key partner in the oyster industry. \n  \n  \n The Meerwald Mercantile will be open featuring items from Art 2 Art\, Art for a Better World\, BeStill\, Golden Harvest Apiaries\, Lena Mills\, Handcrafted by Abraham Warren\, Meadows Edge Alpaca Farm\, Deb DiMarco and more!\nThe Oyster Cracker Cafe will be open with fried oysters and a limited menu. Local wines and beer from the Glasstown Brewing Company at AJ’s Pub.\nAdmittance to AJ’s pub is free for members or $7 admission\n

SUMMARY:July Saturday Highlight Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturdays at 1pm for our Cabinet of Curiosities Highlight Tours\nMuseums were originally cabinets of curiosities filled with rare antiquities and exotic specimens. SUMMARY:May Second Friday on the Bay!
DESCRIPTION:Thank you to our Sponsors! \nBivalve Packing\nGlasstown Brewery\nWHIBCO\, INC\nAllen Insurance Financial\nSurfside Seafood Products\nKaitlyn’s Commercial Cleaning LLC & Bio Clean Team\nYou could be our sponsor for this evening. Click here for more info and application. \nCome join us for Live Music Rob Roy Duo\, Home Slice Mobile Food Truck\, Fried Oysters from the cafe\, Oysters on the half shell from our Premier Sponsor Bivalve Packing\, and beer and wine! \nCome out to see our new film\, On the Shell Pile. This film features local people recounting their memories of the recent past in the Oyster Industry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgainst a backdrop provided by historical photos/home movies\, former residents of Shellpile and Berrytown talk about their town\, their work\, their families\, their churches\, and their singing. The settlement was so named because it was located close by the huge piles of oyster shells discarded from the shucking houses located on or near the docks at Bivalve\, which was the main home of the NJ oyster industry. Though many came from coastal towns of the Chesapeake because the pay and conditions in Bivalve were better\, they were still relegated to doing the hard\, dirty work in the shucking houses or hauling and sorting oysters on hands and knees on the boats. It was grueling work\, standing for hours at long platforms in cold and dirt. There\, they say\, singing spirituals “lifted our spirits and got us through the day.” Despite their low status and difficult work\, on the Shellpile — in their rented wooden houses that frequently flooded at high tide — the residents built a strong community with their own businesses and  churches. They helped each other out — delivered the babies\, watched each other’s children while parents worked and gave what they could to those who needed it. Parents emphasized education\, and sent their children to the three room “Brown School.” Shellpile was razed in the 70s. But what their elders worked for — children and grandchildren getting an education\, becoming doctors\, lawyers\, business owners\, teachers\, politicians\, secretaries — has been fulfilled. The African American community that grew from Shellpile  and Berrytown recall their towns fondly — their memories perhaps tinged with nostalgia — but their presence in the larger region is testimony to the resilience of those who lived “on the Shellpile.”\n\nThe project team included producer Keith Wasserman\, Folklorist Rita Moonsammy and BCB Museum Curator Rachel Dolhanczyk.\nThe film was made possible with grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities\, a state partner of the National\nEndowment for the Humanities and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts / Department\nof State and the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners through the Cumberland County \nCultural and Heritage Commission.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5pm-8:30pm \n  \n
