A seine net is a special fishing net used to safely collect and observe small fish\, crabs\, shrimp\, and other animals that live in the Delaware Bay. Afterward\, we’ll take a closer look at what we find and learn about the animals that live along the shoreline. \nThis interactive experience lets children see local marine life up close. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of documentary films celebrating Delaware Bay’s maritime heritage. \nFilm Screening: Stories from Delaware Bay’s Maritime Heritage\nJoin us for an afternoon screening of three short documentary films exploring the history\, people\, and traditions that shaped New Jersey’s Delaware Bay oyster industry. \n\n\n\nSchooners on the Bay\nThis 1984 documentary tells the story of the wooden schooners once used to dredge oysters under sail on the Delaware Bay. Follow two restored New Jersey oyster schooners as they begin a second life carrying passengers as Windjammers in Maine. The film features interviews with former oyster captains\, historians\, and Windjammer captains and was originally distributed by New Jersey Network. \nOn the Shellpile\nProduced nearly 40 years later by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve and filmmaker Keith Wasserman\, this powerful documentary shares the story of the African American communities that formed around South Jersey’s thriving oyster industry. Meerwald\, and enjoy book sales and an author signing with Museum Curator Rachel Dolhanczyk. \nPresentation and book signing at the Nature Center of Cape May on July 16\, 2026. \n\nAbout Maritime Traditions on the Delaware Bay\nCelebrate America’s 250th by exploring the rich maritime heritage of the Delaware Bay. \nJoin Jessica Yorke\, Executive Director\, and Rachel Dolhanczyk\, Museum Curator and local author\, from the Bayshore Center at Bivalve for an engaging presentation on the history of New Jersey’s Official Tall Ship\, A.J. Meerwald. \nBuilt in 1928 as an oyster schooner\, the A.J. Meerwald worked the Delaware Bay oyster industry before serving the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Young explorers will discover how traditional crab traps work while designing and building their own miniature trap. \nAfterward\, participants will head down to the docks to test their creations and see if they can catch a crab while learning about the wildlife and waters of the Delaware Bay. \nThis interactive program is perfect for curious young explorers who love nature\, science\, and getting their hands dirty! \nAugust Kids Program: Build a Mini Crab Trap\nDuring this hands-on educational program\, children will learn the basics of recreational crabbing and discover how crab traps are designed to safely catch blue crabs. Using simple materials\, each participant will build a mini crab trap to take to the docks for testing. \nAlong the way\, we’ll talk about the importance of blue crabs to the Delaware Bay ecosystem\, the role they play in the food web\, and why healthy marshes and clean waterways are essential for marine life. DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: NJ Folklife Short Films\nJoin us for our August Wednesday Film Feature as we explore the traditions\, craftsmanship\, and communities that have shaped New Jersey’s cultural heritage through a collection of historic documentary films. \nThis special screening features five short documentaries from the 1980s highlighting traditional activities within the New Jersey Pinelands National Preserve\, followed by the documentary The Sea Bright (1991). Together\, these films celebrate the people\, occupations\, and waterways that have defined New Jersey’s history for generations. \nAugust Wednesday Film Feature: NJ Folklife Short Films\nThe first five films were created for the New Jersey State Museum’s exhibition\, “New Jersey Pinelands: Tradition and Environment\,” based on fieldwork conducted by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Originally distributed by New Jersey Network\, these documentaries introduce viewers to some of the region’s enduring traditions\, including: \n\nRailbirding in the coastal meadows\nCranberry growing in the Pine Barrens bogs\nFoxhunting through the pine forests\nGarvey boat building for Delaware Bay clamming\nCedar harvesting in the Pinelands swamps\n\nFollowing the short films\, enjoy The Sea Bright (1991)\, which traces the history of the traditional Sea Bright skiff along New Jersey’s northern coastline. Pisarski\, AICP\, PP\nAt 6:30 PM\, Matthew E. Pisarski\, Planning Director and Department Head for Cumberland County’s Department of Planning\, Tourism & Community Affairs\, will present “Skirmish on the Lower Maurice River.” \nIn 2014\, Cumberland County received a National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program grant to study a Revolutionary War skirmish that occurred along the Maurice River near present-day Port Norris. Although the event was briefly mentioned in historical newspapers\, no comprehensive research had ever been conducted to determine what actually happened. \nLearn how historians and archaeologists used primary source research\, shoreline investigations\, and even ground-penetrating radar to uncover new information about this fascinating chapter of local history and the discoveries made through the project. \nFood & Drinks\nYou can purchase food and drinks throughout the event.
