SUMMARY:July Saturday Highlight Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturdays at 1pm for our Cabinet of Curiosities Highlight Tours\nMuseums were originally cabinets of curiosities filled with rare antiquities and exotic specimens. You think you have seen it all\, but our museum is filled with many stories and cool artifacts. Grab a beverage from AJ’s Pub\, come for a half hour for a highlight tour or program and stay for lunch\, too! \nFree for members or $7 Museum admission\nJuly 1 – Junior Order of United American Mechanics \nTake a closer look at this fraternal organization by examining ledgers and paperwork from the 1920s. Hear how the JOUAM provided disability and life insurances for certain oystermen while lobbying the government to keep prayer in school and “criminal and diseased aliens” out of the country.  \nJuly 8 – The Meerwald Family\nOver the past several years\, the Meerwald family portraits and frames were restored by an art conservator thanks to grants received from the Posomokin #875 Chapter of The Questers. Go on a guided tour of the portraits to hear stories about the family members. \nJuly 15 – Watermen’s Memorial Bell\nIn 2016\, the Port Norris Historical Society\, the McBride Family Enterprises and the Bayshore Center unveiled the Watermen’s Memorial Bell to honor the 100+ oystermen who perished while working the Delaware Bay and River. View newspaper clippings to learn more about some of the men’s lives. \nJuly 22 – Battle of Dallas Landing (Skirmish on the Maurice River)\nIn August 1781\, a skirmish occurred on the Maurice River which is believed to be the only military engagement in Cumberland County with  casualties. The skirmish involved some Cumberland County militia and a group of Loyalists. Ten years ago\, the Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage Commission performed a multi-year study. Find out about their findings and view a short film. \nJuly 29 – Central Railroad of New Jersey\nThe oyster industry during the first three decades of the 20th century would not have prospered without the railroad. It was the railroad that provided the infrastructure to take the oysters to market. Take a tour of railroad related artifacts and learn about this key partner in the oyster industry. \n  \n  \n The Meerwald Mercantile will be open featuring items from Art 2 Art\, Art for a Better World\, BeStill\, Golden Harvest Apiaries\, Lena Mills\, Handcrafted by Abraham Warren\, Meadows Edge Alpaca Farm\, Deb DiMarco and more!\nThe Oyster Cracker Cafe will be open with fried oysters and a limited menu. SUMMARY:September 2nd Friday
DESCRIPTION:Join us September 2nd Friday\, July 8th\, 2023\, 5 pm – 8:30 pm. The Oyster Cracker Café will be serving fried oysters\, hot dogs and macaroni and cheese. Our raw bar will be open with fresh oysters from our premier sponsor Bivalve Packing.\nThank you to our Sponsors!\nBivalve Packing\nGlasstown Brewery\n\n \nMusic on the Docks!\nLibby Prison Minstrels will be performing out on the docks during the evening. The Libby Prison Minstrels are a group of musicians dedicated to history and education through music\n  \nSpeaker at 6:30: Mark Demitroff \nMark Demitroff is a ‘native’ Pine Barrens natural historian and NJ Licensed Tree Expert (#285) who internationally publishes and lectures on local geography—notably on Pleistocene environments.  Mark is an Adjunct Professor at Stockton University\, an inaugural board member at the South Jersey Culture and History Center\, and twice elected to the US Permafrost Association board. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOystermens’ Trade — Cumberland County Employments in Support of Sea-Coast Activities \nEarly on South Jersey maritime commerce was driven by the freightage of hinterland forest production. Vast pine\, oak\, and white cedar stands supplied massive quantities of lumber\, charcoal\, and naval stores (turpentine\, pitch\, resin\, rosin) that needed to be brought to market. Downriver\, a dense network of wharves were constructed along the wooded edges of coastal Maurice River. Like Flint\, Michigan the region become a busy hub of vehicle manufacture in support of transporting the bounty. But instead of assembling cars and trucks in factories\, tidewater dockyards made boats and ships. Coastal zone economy had Pine Barrens “sweetwater” roots\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIn addition to fried oysters\, we will be featuring fresh\, local oysters on the half shell from Bivalve Packing and local wines and beer from the Glasstown Brewing Company.

A proud New Jersey resident\, Emmy is passionate about protecting local wildlife and inspiring the next generation of conservationists. \n \nThe Delaware Bay is well-known for the spectacular concentration of horseshoe crabs and\nmigratory shorebirds that converge on the bayshore beaches each spring. DESCRIPTION:Great food from the Oyster Cracker Café including fried oysters\, delicious\, fresh\, oysters on the half shell\, local beers from Glasstown Brewing Co at AJ’s Pub\, free\, self-guided tours of the Delaware Bay Museum\, an interesting speaker and live music. Check out the Meerwald Mercantile while you are here featuring hand crafted items from several local artists and local authors. All proceeds go to support the Bayshore Center at Bivalve\, home of AJ Meerwald and the Delaware Bay Museum.\n5-8:30 – Live music on the docks – Rob Roy Duo\n \nThe Rob Roy Duo plays quiet\, peaceful\, contemplative music in the genres of popular music of the Renaissance era\, Spanish-influenced South American Folk\, Southern Italian Folk\, and Celtic (Scottish and Irish) as well as a few contemporary pieces. Instruments include mandolin\, mandola\, piccolo mandolin\, classical and steel-strung guitar and some hand-held percussion\, as the pieces dictate.\n6:30 – Speaker in the museum – Jim Blumstein\nThe Great Migration of the twentieth century witnessed the movement of over six million black Americans from the South\, reshaping the social\, political\, and economic landscape of the United States. Recently written historical narratives have challenged the traditional notion of a simple one-way migration\, instead emphasizing the deliberate choices and agency of black migrants. Jim’s research explores a unique aspect of the Great Migration\, focusing on the movement of black individuals from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia to the New Jersey Delaware Bayshore. Despite geographical proximity\, these regions differed significantly in terms of race relations and socio-economic conditions. The migration of black oystermen from the Eastern Shore to the Jersey Bayshore in the early twentieth century exemplifies a “rural-to-rural/ resource-to-resource” migration\, where individuals sought better opportunities without abandoning their skills and traditions. The story challenges conventional and even more recent narratives and suggests that examining similar rural-to-rural migrations could provide valuable insights into the broader dynamics of the Great Migration.
