DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of documentary films celebrating Delaware Bay’s maritime heritage. \nFilm Screening: Stories from Delaware Bay’s Maritime Heritage\nJoin us for an afternoon screening of three short documentary films exploring the history\, people\, and traditions that shaped New Jersey’s Delaware Bay oyster industry. \n\n\n\nSchooners on the Bay\nThis 1984 documentary tells the story of the wooden schooners once used to dredge oysters under sail on the Delaware Bay. Follow two restored New Jersey oyster schooners as they begin a second life carrying passengers as Windjammers in Maine. The film features interviews with former oyster captains\, historians\, and Windjammer captains and was originally distributed by New Jersey Network. \nOn the Shellpile\nProduced nearly 40 years later by the Bayshore Center at Bivalve and filmmaker Keith Wasserman\, this powerful documentary shares the story of the African American communities that formed around South Jersey’s thriving oyster industry. Through firsthand accounts\, the film explores the lives\, families\, faith\, and resilience of those who lived and worked “on the Shellpile.” \nChanging Tides\nProduced and directed by Keith Wasserman\, Changing Tides explores why the Maurice River Cove was once known as the “Oyster Capital of the World.” Through interviews with local watermen\, historians\, scientists\, and community members\, the film preserves the stories of the people\, boats\, and traditions that defined the Delaware Bay’s maritime heritage. \nThese films offer a fascinating look at the history\, culture\, and people who built one of New Jersey’s most important maritime communities. \nEvent Details\n📅 Date: Wednesday\, July 15. 2026 \n🕑 Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM \n📍 Location: Bayshore Center at Bivalve \n🎟 Admission: \n\nFree for members\n$7 for non-members (paid upon arrival)\n\n🍿Popcorn will be provided. \nPlan Your Visit\nThe Bayshore Center at Bivalve is located along the Delaware Bay and offers a unique setting to experience local history\, culture\, and maritime heritage. \nWe encourage guests to arrive a few minutes early to get settled and enjoy the space before the screening begins. Enjoy fresh oysters from Bivalve Packing Co.\, seafood from The Crab Guy Mobile Food Truck\, Oyster Cracker Café favorites including fried oysters\, fried flounder\, chicken fingers\, mac and cheese\, and more. Meerwald\, and enjoy book sales and an author signing with Museum Curator Rachel Dolhanczyk. \nPresentation and book signing at the Nature Center of Cape May on July 16\, 2026. \n\nAbout Maritime Traditions on the Delaware Bay\nCelebrate America’s 250th by exploring the rich maritime heritage of the Delaware Bay. \nJoin Jessica Yorke\, Executive Director\, and Rachel Dolhanczyk\, Museum Curator and local author\, from the Bayshore Center at Bivalve for an engaging presentation on the history of New Jersey’s Official Tall Ship\, A.J. Meerwald. \nBuilt in 1928 as an oyster schooner\, the A.J. Meerwald worked the Delaware Bay oyster industry before serving the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Today\, the nearly 100-year-old vessel continues its legacy as a floating classroom\, offering educational programs and public sails that connect visitors with New Jersey’s maritime history and the ecology of the Delaware Bay. \nToday\, the A.J. Meerwald sails from the Cape May–Lewes Ferry Terminal throughout the summer\, offering public sails\, educational programs\, and private charters.
