The Science of Sailing | Science on the Bayshore
November 21 @ 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm
What does it take to sail a boat? While lots of skill and bravery come into play, we often underestimate just how much we rely on science. From the forces of the wind and currents, to the lift that drives the boat forward, to the mechanical advantage needed to raise the sails, physics plays a huge role! In this workshop, we will explore some of these concepts, using models from the AJ Meerwald as examples. Participants can try their hand at using a “block and tackle” (also known as a pulley), observe simple machines on a model ship, and learn how to tie some knots.
Join us on Thursdays and Saturdays for Science on the Bayshore at the Bayshore Center at Bivalve! During these workshops, we will be teaching bite-sized, hands-on, fun lessons about the Bayshore.
